Top 5 Oculus Releases – June 23rd-July 7th – Summer Funny

What with the massive summer sales on Steam and Oculus alike, it was actually a slow couple of weeks for new releases. That said, we’ve got plenty of interesting new Oculus releases to amuse you and help you celebrate the summer:

Camp Grizzly

What’s summer without camping? In this darkly comedic game from Blacksmith Studios, play a counselor charged with protecting four young campers from a roaming grizzly bear.

Requiring quick reflexes – players must keep the campers entertained while also keeping the campfire fed with firewood – Camp Grizzly is an entertaining new take on the frantic multi-tasking and time management genre with a unique setting perfect for those of us who like the idea of camping more than the reality of sleeping on the ground.

FINSummerVR

An altogether gentler affair, FINSummerVR doesn’t involved bears, just a grouchy elderly gentleman.

Literally a simulator of a lazy summer day in rural Finland, this release includes visits to the sauna and the lake, and is narrated in Finnish with English subtitles. Tuo on mahtavaa!

Catify VR

If even lazy summer days in Finnish villages sound like too much outdoor activity, perhaps you’d prefer a Parisian apartment?

Catify VR puts players in the shoes…or paws, rather…of a house cat, so if just lounging around fails to entertain, there’s also the option of clawing up the furniture.

Rise of Insanity – Episode II

The second episode in this ongoing series once again stands out not only for its unsettling imagery, but its perfectly immersive 1970s setting. Rise of Insanity continues to stand out as one of the best horror games in mobile VR.

Top 5 Oculus Releases – June 16th-22nd – Cross-Platform Fun with Friends

This week’s top releases for Oculus feature cross-platform compatibility, multi-player fun or both. Grab a friend and explore the underworld, loose some arrows at monsters or sit down for a nice game of chess.

Carly and the Reaperman – Escape from the Underworld

Carly and the Reaperman – Escape from the Underworld is a cleverly designed puzzle platformer for two players. One guides a human in standard 2D, while the other players the role of the Reaperman, a friendly skeleton who helps guide the action in VR.

While some players will no doubt be a bit disappointed by the lack of a single-player mode – though that’s apparently coming soon – we’re totally charmed by the approach and the care that went into the puzzle design, which requires both quick thinking and quick reflexes.

We love the graphical approach Odd Raven Studios took with this game, as well. With its neon accent colors and the looming skull of the Reaperman, it’s a bit like vintage cyberpunk with a hint of goth, but more cute and than creepy.

QuiVr

Now out of its lengthy Early Access, one of VR’s more prominent and polished archery games stands out for multiple reasons.

QuiVr offers a drop-in, drop-out multi-player mode and a scaling difficulty system, which makes it a great option for VR newcomers and veteran players.

It also boasts a colorful, neon-tinged graphical approach that makes for a memorable and appealing alternative to the usual dingy earth tones of most fantasy games.

Social Club VR: Casino Nights

Standing out for its social and multi-player optimization, Social Club VR: Casino Nights is also noteworthy for the sheer number of games on offer.

Recognizing that not everyone loves simulated gambling, developers Perilous Orbit have also included chess, backgammon and even a shooting gallery.

Between that and the fact that they’re working on a cross-platform mode for non-VR users, this could potentially become a big player in the VR social space.

Kona VR

from Parabole

A haunting mystery game with survival elements, Kona draws much of its strength from its setting in remote Quebec in the 1970s and its soundtrack by French-Canadian rock act CureLabel.

As players attempt to solve a murder, they’ll contend with bone-chilling temperatures and hints of supernatural horror.

While the game itself was released last year, the new VR implementation integrates both modes, allowing players to continue previous games in VR.

Star Drone

Originally released for Sony PSVR, Star Drone is an unexpected but addictive blend of space shoot-’em-up action, exploration and pinball.

Its simultaneous release on all Oculus platforms gives both Rift and mobile players alike the chance to experience the technicolor action.

Budget Cuts

The biggest release of the week, Budget Cuts combines stealth, robots and a satirical portrayal of corporate capitalism that reminds us a bit of Job Simulator with a side order of Sir, You Are Being Hunted.

Sneak around office environments while dodging the watchful eyes of the android H.R. department. Clever setting and obvious business world metaphors aside – the phrase “office drone” has never been quite so literal – Neat Corporation has created a solid stealth combat game for room scale VR.

Dead Body Falls

An excellent interactive story from Black River Studios, developers of last year’s thoughtful, science fiction-themed Angest, this murder mystery told from multiple perspectives is compelling and atmospheric with just a touch of David Lynch-inqpired weirdness.

Dead Body Falls is also totally free, so mobile VR users have no excuse whatsoever not to visit its haunted hotel hallways.

A futuristic stealth and puzzle game, Orb Labs, Inc. cleverly combines its puzzle-solving mechanic – throwing “orbs” to redirect and avoid laser defense systems – with its movement system to create an experience perfectly suited for VR.

Gunheart

Now out of Early Access, Gunheart is an expansive multi-player action RPG. With its ugly aliens, multiple weapon modifications and high-speed combat – both co-op and PVP – it reminds us a little of Borderlands for VR.
